COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course will trace the introduction, use, and consequences of numerous instant photographic processes, ranging from the second half of the nineteenth century to present-day. Alongside technological developments, we will examine the attendant social, historical, and economic conditions, in addition to the individuals, corporations, and institutions that continue to shape their understanding. From Polaroids in the art museum to software obsolescence to self-curation via social media, the class will challenge students to rethink the ways in which we make decisions through photography, in which photography makes decisions for us and in which the “instant gratification” of instant photography continues to hold such allure.

THIS COURSE REQUIRES A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT KINDS OF ACTIVITIES/ASSIGNMENTS; WEEKLY READINGS, QUIZZES, BLOG POSTS, INSTAGRAM POSTS, GROUP DISCUSSION, CLASS-WIDE DISCUSSION, READING OUTLINES, AND VIEWING AN ASSIGNED FILM EACH WEEK.  STUDENTS’ SOCIAL MEDIA COMPONENT CAN BE ACCESSED UNDER #BUINSTANTPHOTO.

Course Description

This course will examine strategies that photographers have used to explore notions of cultural identity in postwar and contemporary society. We will consider the work of women photographers; of black, Asian, and Native American photographers; and of white photographers who have worked in communities other than their own. Looking closely at photographs by Cindy Sherman, LaToya Ruby Frazier, and James Luna, among others, we will consider such questions as: how do artists use specific techniques and visual qualities to represent aspects of cultural identity? What do photographs suggest about the formation of cultural identity amid shifting social demographics, religious conflict, and political turmoil?
